INDIA TRAVEL INFORMATION – TIPS
Social Customs
A few notes:
As a whole, India is socially conservative. Indians tend to greet each other with a “namaste” or “namaskar” with palms placed together in a prayer position. They will also shake hands; of course, it depends on the situation.
Dress conservatively when visiting places of worship (shoulders and legs covered, for example). India is hospitable and welcoming to all travellers including LGBTQ.
Married Indian women wear a bindi (a red dot/sticker or piece of jewelry) on their foreheads as a symbol of marriage, although many women also wear wedding bands. Many women wear traditional sarees (saris), though many younger girls and women do not. If you wear a saree, it will be appreciated by locals.
Religion
India, home to 1.4 billion people, is a secular society where a number of religions are freely practiced. The majority of Asian Indians practice Hinduism. The other major religions are Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity and Islam; and a small percentage of population practice Judaism, Zoroastrianism, and Baha’I’ Faith. Food and Drinks
Some religions in India have food restrictions. For example, Hindus and Sikhs do not eat beef, and Muslims do not eat pork or drink alcohol. Many Hindus are vegetarian. For vegetarians and vegans, India offers a range of delicious culinary dishes. Not all Indian dishes, are spicy hot. Aim to eat cooked vegetables vs raw. Buffets are popular and the ones at hotels usually also offer international cuisine. As for alcoholic beverages, beer and whiskey are more popular than wine, but wine is slowly catching on in India.
Water
It is best to drink filtered/bottled water and avoid drinking unfiltered water to prevent getting sick. Bring your own refillable water bottle. For purchased water bottles, be sure to check the lid.
Money
Indian currency is the India rupee. Credit cards (MC and Visa) are widely accepted. ATMs are available.
Tourist Visa
For information about tourist visas, contact our travel agency, Sunspots Holidays. If you are Canadian, you need a visa to enter India. If you are coming from another country, check with our travel agency, or the consulate to determine if a visa is required for you to enter.
Toilet Facilities and Hygiene Products
Bring a small package of Kleenex, as well as hand sanitizer, for when we are on the road. Also, bring feminine hygiene products with you should you need them. Our luxury hotels will have most things you need.
Women and Safety
Like any place in the world, it is best to be aware of your surroundings. Consider leaving your fine, expensive jewelry at home. Bring costume jewelry that you would not be heart-broken if lost or stolen. Consider buying an inexpensive ring that looks like a wedding band, whether you are married or traveling solo.
WiFi
Free Wifi is widely available across India.
Cell Phone
To use your cell phone in India, consider buying a SIM card that you can buy in many stores across India.
