Wine tips: custom wine cellar

If you are interested in building a custom wine cellar, here are some quick tips to help get you started.

Planning and research: determine why you want a wine cellar and how you want to use it. Is it for storage only? Do you want a tasting area? Custom wine cellars run a range of costs, depending on everything from style to functionality and accessories such as lighting, flooring, décor and furniture.

Location in your home: determine where do you have the space for a wine cellar, what is the ideal location, how will this impact your day-to-day living and access to the wine.

Elements to consider: you’l need to factor in insulation requirements; vapor or moisture barrier; and airtight environment when the cellar door is closed. All of these elements come with a cost.

Style: decide on a style that suits your lifestyle and the space you have. Styles range from traditional to modern to contemporary. Materials may include glass, brick, stone, metal, or others. Wine racks can be for individual bottles storage, or bulk; and some may be functional as part of the furniture, such as a tabletop with storage bins underneath.

Cooling system: depending on the style you choose and the space you have, you will need a cooling system. These range in price, with some being quite expensive.

Hire an expert: it’s best to hire a consultant or company, such as an architect or builder, that is knowledgeable and reliable to build your custom wine cellar, based on your needs and budget.

DIY kits: if you like the custom wine cellar look, but your budget isn’t in agreement, you can buy a do-it-yourself kit and save money.
